to the north and Nantucket Sound to the South. It goes without saying,
then, that there are many beaches in this little town, eighteen to be
exact, including two fresh water pond beaches. All of the beaches in Dennis
are managed by the town (beach passes for the day, week, or season can
be purchased at Dennis Town Hall). If you are a cycling enthusiast, the
renowned Cape Cod Rail Trail begins in Dennis. Formerly train tracks that
ran the length of the Cape, the rails were removed and paved over to create
this 22-mile bike trail that runs through picturesque scenery all the
way from Dennis to Wellfleet. An area to the side of the bike trail is
reserved for runners, hikers, and horseback riding, although there are
several nature conservation areas in Dennis that are also good spots for
hiking and horseback riding.
The town has two golf courses (Dennis Pines and Dennis Highlands), and
many charter boats are available for fishing excursions on both Cape Cod
Bay and Nantucket Sound. Kayaking and canoeing are both popular along
the along the Bass and Swan rivers, and there are several outfitters from
which to rent.
For the kids, things to do in Dennis when they have had enough of the
beaches, there is miniature golf, go-carts, a water park, and even an
ice skating rink that is open year-round. The town itself is made up of
five villages, so there are various centers for shopping, dining, and
taking in the historic architecture. Dennis also boasts a lively arts
scene, home to the Cape Playhouse and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. Ample
