Barnstable Cape Cod Massachusetts
The large town of Barnstable, located on the Mid-Cape, is home to seven
villages: Barnstable Village, Centerville, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, Osterville,
West Barnstable, and Hyannis,
with Hyannis the most renowned and populous among them. Barnstable is
a hub of activity on Cape Cod, and a main transit point to and from to
and from the mainland and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket
(the village of Hyannis is home to the Cape’s primary airport, Barnstable
Airport, as well the port to catch many of the ferries to and from the
mainland and islands). A variety of accommodations are available however
your best bet will be the bed and breakfast (B&B), small getaway resorts,
and lovely inns.
The town’s central location affords convenient access to the Upper
and Lower Cape and the islands. It is also easy to step out of the bustle
and get back to nature. Barnstable has nine beaches on Nantucket Sound,
one on Cape Cod Bay, and one freshwater beach on Hathaway’s Pond.
Excellent hiking and bird-watching can be found on the trails and barrier
beach of the Sandy Neck Great Salt Marsh Conservation Area (the largest
conserved area on the Cape after the Cape Cod National Seashore), and
the Audubon Society’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary.
For sports lovers, there are two teams based in Barnstable from the Cape
Cod Baseball League, as well as several golf courses. If you are looking
for a centrally located base from which to discover the rest of Cape Cod,
with easy access to the islands and many points on the Cape, the town
of Barnstable and its many villages has much to offer.
