Sandwich Cape Cod Massachusetts
Located in the Upper Cape, Sandwich Massachusetts is not only
the oldest town in Cape Cod it is among the oldest towns in the country,
having been settled in 1639. Only an hours drive from Boston, Providence,
and Provincetown, Sandwich Cape Cod not only boasts the typical Cape Cod
treasures of pristine salt and fresh-water beaches and preserved lands
for hiking and biking, you can also enjoy plentiful restaurants,
shops, and vacation amenities. There are also cultural attractions such
as the Sandwich Glass Museum (exhibits and glass-blowing demonstrations).
Not to be missed is the Heritage Museum and Gardens. It features an antique
car museum, an American history museum, an art museum with a working hand-carved
carousel and a folk art gallery, as well as 100 acres of lovely gardens
and miles of walking paths. There is also the Thornton Burgess Museum,
celebrating the Cape Cod author and naturalist known for his children’s
books such as Old Mother West Wind. Being the oldest town on the Cape,
there are numerous historic sites of interest, such as the historic Hoxie
House, a traditional salt-box house built in the 1600s that is open for
public tours. The Benjamin Nye Homestead and the Wing Fort House. Accommodations such as Sandwich’s 300-year-old Dan’l Webster Inn and the
Newcomb Tavern, built in 1693 and located across from the town’s
old grist mill, allow you to spend your stay in historic style. Whether
planning an extended stay or just passing through for a day trip, Sandwich
has a lot of charm and a lot to offer.
